In true Baggy Green Spirit, Team Barrydale came from behind to claim the inaugural Nashes (Nappie Ashes) victory by 1 point against their Swellendam rivals at Montagu Golf Club.
Team Captain Mickey Mentz gave chase after being behind for most of this enthralling contest against Johan van den Berg who was leading with an uncomfortable 2-point lead for five of the nine holes.
Things however took a turn on the 7th, when the Baggy Greens managed to draw even with an amazing approach shot that led to a recovery point after the Roses from Swellendam failed to secure putt from less-than-one-foot out.
From there, it was downhill for the Roses…and the Baggy Greens Captain applied pressure.
“I would like to thank my coach Renuan Bistro from Boksburg for the work he did with me in training. A huge thanks also has to go out the the legendary Cassie Bou who keeps me on motivated through times and Alex Flex for letting me use his driver,” said an elated Mentz.
“The burning of that nappy was the highlight of my golfing career.”
Playing at home, proved to show little advantage to the Baggy Greens, but it was more a factor of the inability of the Roses’ ability to cope with the pressure applied.
With matters all square on the final hole, Van den Berg, launched his drive no further than the wishful hopes of a Kanye West Presidential Campaign and barely made the ladies tee.
Mentz drove down the fairway to set-up the Baggy Greens for a sure victory and with the Roses failing to secure any points on the final whole, the victory was almost in the bag.
A difficult, curvy, uphill put by Mentz, lipped and tipped in led to the accelerating first win of the now so called Nashes, which will be played once a month for charity fundraising by these teams.
The Barrydale Baggy Greens obviously referring to the Ausies in thee Cricket Ashes, which spawns well over a century, and the Roses from Swellendam the English, and because of Rose Cottage.
The Nashes spawned after Mentz and van den Berg decided to burn the nappies of the previous nappy bet, and placed the ashes in a trophy, which will be competed for monthly.
