Now in its 12th year, the event once again supports Barrydale Hospice, with last year’s festival raising R100,000 to fund vital home visits, free care hours, and medical supplies for patients in need. T

Barrydale is preparing to burst into colour as the 12th annual Barrydale in Bloom Festival gets underway this November, with organisers pledging continued support for the local hospice.

The nature-themed festival, combines art, gardens, and community spirit. This year’s programme places a strong emphasis on land art, with acclaimed artist Strijdom van der Merwe leading a series of eco-focused talks.

Gardens Open to the Public

More than 20 gardens across Barrydale and Smitsville will open their gates to the public as part of the Open Garden Safari, running on Saturday, 15 November (09:00–17:00) and Sunday, 16 November (09:00–13:00).

From classic floral designs to natural, wilder spaces, most of the gardens are organically maintained, many bordering the Huis River and designed to attract pollinators, insects, and birds. Visitors are advised to bring sun hats and sunscreen for the walks.

Art, Market, and Workshops

In addition to the gardens, Barrydale in Bloom will host:

  • Market@Karoolkie featuring local makers, plant sales, a hospice tea garden, and children’s entertainment.
  • Workshops by Scott Hart and Tielman de Villiers (Magpie Art Collective) and land artist Janet Botes.
  • A Friday night long-table dinner with chefs from Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, followed by a charity auction.
  • Food events including Champagne and Canapés at Die Langhuis and brunch at Kamala Karoo Sanctuary.
  • Open artists’ studios and a local painters’ exhibition at Karoolkie Cellar.

Dogs are welcome throughout the weekend, with a special “Barkrun” parkrun for four-legged companions planned for Saturday morning.

Raising Funds for Hospice Care

In 2024, the festival raised R100,000 for Barrydale Hospice, enabling more than 900 home visits and almost 1,000 hours of free care. Organisers are hoping to surpass that milestone this year.

“Barrydale in Bloom is more than just a festival – it’s about sustaining essential palliative care in our community,” said organiser Tielman de Villiers.

Tickets, which include a detailed festival map, will be available online and at the Karoolkie Market.
