A routine trip to Barrydale Agrimark soon turned into an unforgettable experience for local resident Anton van Vliet.
Initially, Van Vliet was outraged to discover that customers were being screwed by a certain supplier. But thanks to swift action from management, this story has a happy ending.
“I noticed something wasn’t quite right. I checked once, checked again, and then finally, my suspicions were confirmed,” said Van Vliet.
It all started when he was working on a project. Being the meticulous planner that he is, Van Vliet soon realised he didn’t have enough screws to complete the task.
“I went to buy a pack of self-drive screws from Agrimark Barrydale this afternoon. Regrettably, I found a pack labelled ‘10’ but there were only eight screws inside,” Van Vliet explained.
That’s when he decided to investigate. He notified the supplier about the issue, and with the assistance of Agrimark branch manager Nathan van der Heyde, the faulty stock was removed from the shelves.
“I totally understand the frustration this caused you, but I’m happy that the team at Agrimark was able to assist,” the supplier responded.
Van Vliet added, “I can confirm that I spoke to Nathan van der Heyde, the branch manager, and the packets of ‘short-supplied’ stock have been checked and removed from the shelves.”
Van Vliet expressed his appreciation for how the situation was handled and thanked Van der Heyde for holding the supplier accountable.
Meanwhile, On a More Serious Note…
Van Vliet now faces a personal challenge where he risks being “screwed” in an entirely different way.
A BackaBuddy campaign has been launched by Kim Jones to raise funds for the urgent eye surgery Van Vliet desperately needs.

Jones made a plea on the page stating the following:
Anton van Vliet is a much-loved Barrydaler. He is well known in our small village for always being willing to help in any way that he can. His generous spirit makes him a welcome addition to any event, and I am sure that, like me, you can’t wait to see him again.
Unfortunately, he may not be able to see you shortly if we don’t get together to help him.
Anton has recently received the devastating news that the cataracts discovered earlier in the year are growing over his eyes rapidly. If he does not have the needed operations, he will be completely blind soon.
He will require 2 operations – one on each eye, and they cannot be done simultaneously as he will still need to be able to live during recovery.
We have budgeted for both operations, hospital stay, his new glasses after both operations, transport to and from the hospital, as well as a small contribution to groceries during his recovery period.
If you know Anton, you know that he is a humble soul and not anyone who would ask for a handout, so you are welcome to contact me if you would like to assist in a manner outside of donations.
