Operation Brakkenjan, an initiative that has helped to feed thousands in of dogs in other communities was launched at OK Grocer Barrydale on May 22.
Through this drive OK shoppers can donate pet food at a designated trolly that is located at the entrance of the store.
The need is massive and with this drive we can hopefully have enough food to go out every Saturday and feed many of the animals.

From Hermanus to a Barrydalebrak
This brainchild of former journalist and current co-owner of the Barrydale Backpackers and Dung Beetle Pub/Restaurant, Janine van der Riet Neethling, was introduced in the village after she noticed how much time and effort Denel Honeyball was spending in her quest to stop animal cruelty.
Honeyball heads up Dieresorg Barrydale and is constantly out and about, tending to her voiceless fury friends.
“The reason why I decided to launch Operation Brakkenjan here is because I’ve noticed how Denel helps animals (mostly out of her own pocket) every day,” said Janine, adding that she was involved in a similar drive while she was a scribe in Hermanus.
Janine explained how the new owners of the OK, Janique and Lindie-Lee Olivier did not hesitate to get involved as they are also huge animal lovers.
“From OK’s side we will always look to assist where we can and we would like to encourage all our customers to support this great initiative,” said Janique.
Animals in dire need of assistance
Denel explained that unemployment and the tough financial climate in the village is
“We are more into preventative care and education as well as things like providing food and parasite treatment. This is now part the initiative to start helping people feed their animals.
“If you go into certain areas of town there are a lot of dogs that are skin-and-bone and they are tied-up and they can’t go and scavenge for their own food either.
She explained that although many people love their dogs very much, but everybody is struggling financially, you have pensioners and many people who are unemployed so sthere are constant requests for me to help with the dipping and feeding of animals.
“The need is massive and with this drive we can hopefully have enough food to go out every Saturday and feed many of the animals.
Here’s how you can also help
If you do not reside in Barrydale and would like to assist Dieresorg Barrydale, make use of the banking details below.
While this Non Profit Company will never have enough food for all the animals in need, they also need funds to purchase medicine and other consumables.
