Weaving Threads of Kindness: R18k Raised for Barrydale Hospice

Written by Mickey Mentz

A beautiful thread was woven between care and craft and that Barrydale is stronger for it.

Donations toward this worthy cause started from as little as R30, and it was therefore an absolute delight when Barrydale Hand Weavers revealed that no less than R18 000 had been raised for the local Hospice.

This community project was initiated in March, and clients who purchased any of the exquisite handwoven products on their website were given the option of supporting the cause.

“The work Sister Nickie Crookes and her team do in the community is of great value, and we are glad that we could help,” said Hand Weavers owner Arran Bastable.

“The Hospice team of dedicated carers ensures that no one faces life’s most difficult moments alone. Whether responding to emergencies, dressing wounds, or providing comfort to those in their final days, these compassionate professionals are always there – often working through the night, beyond the call of duty.”

Barrydale Hospice is an organisation that does not receive government funding and therefore relies solely on community support to do its work.

In turn, Crookes and her team showed their appreciation for the support by paying a visit to the men and women who create Barrydale’s iconic products.

During the visit, the Hospice carers and Hand Weavers exchanged stories, shared smiles, and showed mutual respect for one another.

You could say a beautiful thread was woven between care and craft and that Barrydale is stronger for it.

“Although we are not strangers to the beautiful blankets, tablecloths, and placemats the Hand Weavers make, this is the first time we’ve seen just how much effort and care goes into every product,” said Crooks.

“We would like to thank Arran, Denise, and the entire Weavers team for the difference they’ve made in the lives of this community through initiatives like this. We love and respect you for it.”

The Hospice workers were given the opportunity to try their hand at the age-old skill of hand weaving, and while great fun was had, they quickly realised that weaving is a craft that requires deep dedication.

The good news for readers that may have missed out on donating towards this cause is that the Hand Weavers have extended their fundraising campain for Hospice and that you can donate by simply clicking on the link below.

Hospice Charity Shop Now Open

In a vibrant addition to Barrydale, the Hospice team was beaming with pride when their Charity Shop in Bain Street opened its doors on July 18.

This latest edition to the village is viewed by many as the first step toward recapturing the character of a town that has, for a while, been somewhat neglected.
