An off-duty police officer was arrested following a collision in Kees Street, Barrydale, on Sunday night.
According to police, the 40-year-old officer faces charges of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies confirmed that two vehicles collided at approximately 21:50 on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
“The suspect was arrested and later released on a warning to appear in court,” Spies said.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
The officer is also facing an internal investigation in terms of the SAPS Disciplinary Regulations.
Spies said the internal process would run separately from the criminal investigation.
“The allegations against the member are regarded as serious and an internal investigation in terms of the SAPS Disciplinary Regulations is also underway,” he said.
The suspect was arrested and later released on a warning to appear in court on February 18, 2027.
The outcome of both the criminal and internal processes will depend on the investigations and subsequent proceedings.
