The highly expected Maria Elizabeth Rothmann (M.E.R) 150 Festival officially opened its doors at Die Schuur of Drostdy Museum on August 27 with a captivating English-language overview of M.E.R.’s literary works by the poet and writer Leslie Howard, drawing a dedicated audience from Stellenbosch, Barrydale and more – eager to sightsee into the author’s contributions.

Howard, the featured speaker for the foundational session, delivered a wide and engaging presentation and illuminated the enduring legacy of M.E.R. and her important role in shaping Afrikaans literature. The session provided a fresh perspective on her writings, appealing to both longtime admirers and those new to her work.
Charles De Kock, the principal and managing director of Chas Everitt Swellendam, proudly showed his appreciation by gifting Howard with local Swellendam products like oils, etc.

“Leslie, its such a honour to have you here and I want to take you for today for giving such an inspirational and wonderful session, it much appreciated by us all, including Chas Everitt Swellendam,” said De Kock.
Howard emphasised her appreciation through kindness and her general warm-hearted conversations and personality.
“This event has been wonderful, and inspirational,” Howard said.
The success deepened the joint effort between local organisations, with the Swellendam Heritage Association playing a crucial role in its organisation.
