The future of the Barrydale Bowls Club now rests in the hands of local businessman Daniel Southey, who has been awarded the tender to take over the management of the facility.

The Bowls Club, previously known as the Barrydale Recreational Club, has fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years and is in urgent need of revitalisation.
During 2025, the Swellendam Municipality declined to renew the contract of the club’s previous tenants. Following numerous complaints, the municipality decided to place the premises out on tender.
The tender includes custodianship of the Bowls Club as well as the adjacent tennis courts. Southey was awarded the tender after submitting an application and is believed to have been one of very few, if not the only, applicants.
Speaking to News62, Southey emphasised that while it is important not to repeat the mistakes of the past, the focus should now be firmly on the future.
He said the restoration of the club would require a collective effort from the Barrydale community.
“This is a valuable community asset, and I will need the assistance of every business and interested resident to help restore the premises to its former glory,” said Southey.
“We simply can’t dwell on the past at this stage. There is too much work ahead,” he added.
Southey confirmed that the club will be open to all residents who pay an annual membership fee, and that members will be allowed to invite guests to make use of the facilities.
“This is by no means a quick fix,” he said. “But the hard work has already started, and I will keep the community informed as we move forward.”
Further details regarding membership and future plans will be communicated in due course.
