During a sublime performance at The Country Pumpkin in Barrydale, Wendy Oldfield highlighted that she has far from given up on writing songs that inspire. In fact, the tracks on her latest album, Salt, serve as a reminder that she will continue to build on her already impressive body of work.
Let’s forget about the hit Acid Rain for a second, the melodies and meaning that is gained from her 7th album proves why she is one of the most celebrated vocalists in the country.
“I really enjoyed making this album and if it was not for this pandemic, I would have released it far earlier,” Oldfield said.
She explained that the album was produced pre Covid and that she could not wait to start performing her latest work in front of live audiences.
“It is really nice to make new stuff although a lot of what is captured on the album is part of my experiences in a country with such a diverse history.
Oldfield is currently on the road and is due (lockdown regulations permitting) to treat both Cape Town and Johannesburg audiences to what she described as a performance that aso shows her progression as an artist.
“I’m not going for nostalgia at this stage. My new album needs to be appreciated for what it is.”
At The Country Pumpkin that was exactly the case. Despite several calls from village hooligans (yes we heard you Sean) to perform a few classics, she stuck to her plan and blew the crowd away with fresh, new music that, like many of her hits, are likely to become part of our everyday life listening.
