Her first step was to ensure that the dilapidated thatch roof at the southern entrance of town was taken down. After that Helene Joubert and a few friends made it their mission to plant bougainvilleas at the respective corners of the now bare structure and the final step will be to hand a new welcoming sign at the same structure.
To do this Swellendam Municipality Deputy Mayor Councillor Michael Pokwas on August 4 joined Joubert and local business owner Arran Bastable of Barrydale Hand Weavers on site to discuss the steps that needed to be taken to erect the new sign.

Bastable had just overseen the erection of new signage at the Joseph Barry Cellar and shared his insights into the design and cost with the team.
He also had a mock-up version of the signage made.
Ward Committee tasked to oversee roll-out
Pokwas has been tasked to draft a proposal for council, but noted that he would first present the work to his ward committee for approval.
“As Ward Councillor I support the proposed initiative that was presented by Helena Joubert and Arran Bastable and I would like to thank them for the professional manner in which this project has been approached,” said Pokwas.
He added that it is important for guests and residents of Barrydale to receive a warm welcome when they enter town.
