Get off the beaten track at Calitzdorp Uncorked this weekend

Written by Mickey Mentz

Warning: Exploring this Klein Karoo dorp can become an addiction

Whatever you do at this year’s Calitzdorp Uncorked, do not buy Peter Coe’s novel Passenger X. Sure, visit his gallery situated on the Groenfontein Valley Road , but do not be lured into buying his book.

It is so terrible, I could not make it past this message he wrote in the copy I regretfully purchased.

I’m also sorry Peter.

Okay fine, the wacky Kiwi patron of the arts (his installation art is mind baffling) at one stage refused to sell a very handsome Ibanez to me but hey, at least his house is filled with some incredible works and he makes a fairly decent cup of joe – included with all purchases of Passenger X.

The awesome art it is not even entirely Peter’s own fault. For this we also blame the incredibly gifted Lizel von Wielligh.

When taking this trip, do give yourself enough time as there are many awe-inspiring things to discover along the Groenfontein Valley Circle Route with its majestic Swartberg backdrop.

Check out some of those spots here —> queenofcalitzdorp.co.za/groenfontein-valley-circle-route/

Did I mention the aloes are currently in bloom…

In the town itself locals are likely to point you to Die Bakhuis which, since opening its doors in December, has become a firm favourite for lovers of coffee, pizza and that great Karoo hospitality of Yuriëtta and Henry.

And for some reason I just have to make a stop at Smallest Bar on Route62 – tucked away at the back of Zamani Grill. The reason must bust be a combination of their hospitality and super cool shot glasses. Thank me later.

As for the actual Calitzdrop Uncorked festival, we recommend that you start at the tourist information centre and enjoy what should be a brilliant weekend in a kief Karoo town.

The weekend is jam packed with a wine/brandy/whiskey tasting at the Boplaas Family Vineyards should

Simply the best @Boplaas
