Barrydale could very soon become famous for having the most pizza places per capita in South Africa.
That is because there are seven businesses in this village that has less than 6 000 residents that serve a delicious slice.
Obviously the News62 team had to investigate and with the assistance of photographer Graham Abbott, we managed to get to the bottom of this phenomenon.
Pizzas as far as the eye can see
In a small village where every chef takes great pride in the food they serve, we decided to tackle this tantalising task from the southern part of town. Our focus was never to judge the best pizza, but only to showcase what’s on offer.
*All pizzas were consumed by Graham and a young photography student from Cape Town. No crusts were thrown away during this delicious experience.
1. Karoo Saloon
The Karoo Saloon is situated about 15km outside of town and they offer excellent live music every week of the year. Their pizzas….rock.

2. Joubert-Tradauw Private Cellar – Alfresco Deli
Barrydale’s flagship wines at Joubert-Tradauw – accompanied by a slice of pizza – is probably one of the best things you can do on a Saturday afternoon. Wine tastings and their delicious platters are available Mondays to Saturdays – pizzas only on Saturdays.

3. Route 62 Stop
At the famous Route 62 Stop you can find anything from fruit to roosterkoek and even a tyre repair kit. Their pizzas are loaded with goodness (and toppings).

4. The Country Pumpkin
If anyone is to blame for the abundance of interesting sites to visit along Route 62 in Barrydale it is The Country Pumpkin. Dereck saw the potential in 1854 and yes their pizzas are top notch.

5. The Maker’s Brew
If wine and pizza is a match made in heaven, then you’ll agree that a brilliant brew also pairs well with a slice (or four). The Maker’s Brew takes great pride in being masters of their craft, so best put that to the test.

6. Karoo Daisy
