CAPE TOWN – A violent protest that erupted in Blackheath early this morning is still ongoing, with police officials working to maintain control of the situation.
The protest was initiated by the South African National Civic Organization (SANCO) and, according to Cape {town} Etc, resulted in a complete shutdown of Wimbledon Road between Buttskop Road and School Road.

According to a News62 reporter on the scene, residents are demanding a functional and fully equipped clinic, a multipurpose hall, sports grounds, safe parks, streetlight maintenance, proper sanitation including flowing sewage, and a formal taxi rank with shelter. Concerns were also raised regarding the performance and accountability of local councillors.
“The protest started at approximately 2am in Happy Valley. By 1pm this afternoon, hundreds of police officials were on the scene, including air support from a helicopter. The situation might escalate further, but we hope this is not the case,” the reporter said.
Demonstrators set tyres alight, and stones were hurled at vehicles.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area entirely until the situation stabilizes.
