Waste not want not: Even though our dams are full, water is still a scarce commodity

The fact that so many homes in the village have access to Leiwater has become one of the key selling points for estate agents who promote this slice of paradise to the world.

It is, however, a huge privilege to have access to this global resource that is becoming more and more scarce by the day.

When compared to regular municipal water, Leiwater is provided at a fraction of the cost and although not fit for human consumption, it plays a huge role in domestic gardening – one of the favourite pastimes of so many Barrydale residents.

Applications for the renewal of leiwater services must reach Swellendam Municipality by 30 September.

“It is again that time of the year when we need to pay our leiwater levies and this is also a time for us to be grateful that we can call this exquisite part of the world home,” says Ruth Goodman.
