I’d rather be hated for who I am, than hated for who I’m not – Kurt Cobain

Hippies from all corners of the country will gather at Barrydale’s Karoo Saloon this weekend for what should again be a groovy three days of good vibes and great music.

This year’s Karoostock takes place from August 27 to 29 and will see bohemian lovechild Jeandré Swanepoel join rock legends Akkedis, seventies specialists Crowfoot, the newly formed BOK Band (Bunch of Knobs lead by Craig Vee) and The Hazy Blue Band as they relive those days when social change was brought about through song.

With winter’s worst weather steadily disappearing in the rear-view mirror, Saloon events manager Wilko Spangenberg predicts that the trip of hippies who have confirmed their attendance are set to have the time of their lives.

“Yea totes man!. Peace, love and as much freedom as we are allowed to have under Covid regulations will be the theme of this weekend, ” Wilko confirmed.

What hippies can expect

The festival quite fittingly kicks-off on the 27th with a tribute to the musical geniuses who lived only 27 years before leaving this world. Celebrating the craft of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain should make for an epic opening evening.

The next day, the best dressed hippie couple stand to win a rad prize and, in an attempt capture the Woodstock spirit, the artists who will be performing at the Karoo Saloon are set deliver their best Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joe Cocker and The Who renditions.

Capping off the weekend’s festivities the Akkedis Band confirmed that they will be delivering a soulful Sunday set while the free-thinkers, drop-outs and beatniks chow down on Carol’s legendary munchies.

In the words of the renegades of funk:

“It has to start somewhere. It has to start somehow. What better place than here? What better place than now,”
