Stormers kicking coach Gareth Wright shared valuable insight with players from Barrydale Flying Eagles, Barrydale Stryders and Hoërskool Barrydale as part of John Dobson’s Rock ‘n Rugby weekend, which took place in Barrydale this past weekend.

Wright has mentored some of the country’s finest goal kickers over the years, making it an absolute privilege for the town’s young rugby players to learn from one of the best in the business.
The coaching session was arguably one of the most meaningful contributions Stormers coach John Dobson has made during the four years he has been a guest of honour at the Karoo Art Hotel.
During his previous visits, Dobson always made a point of spending time with the local rugby clubs, inspiring what may well be future Springboks. He has donated playing kit, mentored local coaches and has consistently been willing to support the clubs whenever they needed guidance.

This year, however, Dobson entrusted Wright with the task of developing Barrydale’s young goal kickers. The time Wright invested in the players was invaluable, and the practical advice he shared will undoubtedly benefit them both on and off the field.
With loyal Barrydale rugby supporter Rick Melvill, owner of the Karoo Art Hotel, also in attendance, the scene was set for a session filled with purpose and intensity. Melvill remains one of the few local business owners who regularly supports rugby at Die Rasper, further demonstrating his commitment to community sport.
Flying Eagles coach Malcolm Jonas thanked Wright for the time he spent with the players and assured him that the lessons shared would not be forgotten.
For a village where rugby means so much, Saturday’s session was about far more than improving a kicking technique. It was a reminder that when experienced professionals invest their time in young players, they invest in an entire community. Long after the final whistle has blown and the visitors have returned home, the knowledge shared on Barrydale’s rugby fields will continue to shape the next generation of local talent.
