The construction of a brand-new hospital in Swellendam is set to commence before the end of 2025, VM&K CEO Luzanne van den Berg confirmed.
“It is with great pleasure and excitement that we would like to announce that we will be breaking ground before the end of 2025,” Van den Berg said.

The all-new Humanitas Hospital will be located in the new Oewerlust Estate in Voortrek Street and will feature exciting services like a 24-hour emergency room, a 24-hour emergency dispensary, 24-hour radiology, as well as a 24-hour laboratory.
“We will soon be in discussion with our local pharmacies to partner with us in this new venture, and we cannot wait to bring much-needed services to the greater Swellendam region,” said VM&K Managing Director Johan van den Berg.
While the Humanitas Hospital license that VM&K was awarded in partnership with Tru Consultants makes provision for 60 beds, the initial construction phase will only cater for 30 beds.
Other additions to the hospital include chemo beds, dialysis treatment, as well as a gynecologist.
Here’s how the community will benefit
Aside from the 400 job opportunities that will be created during this project, the Humanitas Hospital will be managed in a Public-Private Partnership, which means that many services that are not available at the Swellendam Government Hospital will become available to all residents.
“As Swellendam residents know all too well, many medical services and specialised operations are not available at the state hospital.
“At this acute treatment hospital, we will be addressing these matters with the added advantage of a 24-hour laboratory and dispensary,” Van den Berg said.
Van den Berg also confirmed that Paarl-based medical building specialists, Chianti Property Holdings, will be in charge of the construction of Humanitas Hospital.
The hospital will be modelled on one of Chianti Property Holdings’ current projects that is underway in Gansbaai (see pictures below).

“Having already built no fewer than six hospitals, Chianti Property Holdings was an obvious choice.”
“We know that Humanitas Hospital will change the lives of thousands of people in this community for the better, and we cannot wait to get started,” Van den Berg added.
