One Honey Sucker Truck Left to Serve Entire Swellendam Municipality

Written by Mickey Mentz

Residents across the Swellendam Municipal area may soon find themselves facing growing sewage-related problems after it was confirmed that only a single honey sucker truck is currently available to service the entire municipality.

A truck ordinarily assigned to Barrydale is currently out of service for maintenance, with no indication as to when it will be operational again.

In the interim, Barrydale and Suurbraak have been sharing a second vehicle. However, that truck reportedly broke down on Saturday, leaving the municipality reliant on a single operational honey sucker truck to service a vast area stretching from Swellendam and Suurbraak to Barrydale, Malgas and Infanta.

The situation has already started having consequences on the ground.

News62 has received reports of sewage spilling into streets in parts of Barrydale (featured photo shows a Barrydale spill), while a growing backlog in the pumping of septic tanks is causing concern among residents.

Although the municipality has faced similar challenges in the past, questions are once again being raised about whether sufficient contingency measures are in place when critical service delivery vehicles become unavailable.

A long standing sewage issue in Smitsville was highlighted over the weekend.

Planning under the spotlight

What is particularly concerning is that a single vehicle is now expected to cover hundreds of kilometres of municipal infrastructure, while simultaneously responding to sewage spills, blocked systems and scheduled septic tank pumping operations.

Residents have expressed fears that delays in attending to sewage-related complaints could create environmental and public health risks if left unresolved for extended periods.

The latest breakdown has also highlighted the municipality’s dependence on a limited fleet of specialised vehicles to maintain basic sanitation services.

While mechanical failures are often unavoidable, critics argue that the recurring reliance on a single truck to service the entire municipal area points to broader questions around planning, fleet management and service coordination.

For communities already experiencing sewage spills and delayed services, the immediate concern remains simple: when will additional capacity be restored, and how quickly can the growing backlog be addressed?

News62 has approached Swellendam Municipality for comment regarding the status of the vehicles, the extent of the backlog, and what interim measures are being implemented to ensure continued sanitation services across the municipal area.
