A new chapter of opportunity has opened for the children of Railton in Swellendam on November 11 with the launch of the Swellendam Rotary School, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre built to serve one of the area’s most under-resourced communities.

The new centre, located in the Rondomskrik community, was made possible through a partnership between Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB), the Rotary Club of Swellendam, and the Rotary Club of Newlands.

It offers a safe, nurturing space for more than 150 children to learn, play, and grow while also providing aftercare and adult literacy programmes for the wider community.

Designed with family and community needs at its heart, the facility includes purpose-built classrooms, outdoor play areas, and a food garden to support early literacy, nutrition, and holistic development.

“Investing in early childhood education is an investment in our communities’ future,” said Priscilla Urquhart, Head of Public Affairs, Communication and Sustainability at Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages.

“We are proud to stand alongside the Rotary Clubs and local partners to deliver a facility that gives children the best possible start while strengthening family resilience.”

The school’s official opening ceremony brought together guests from across Swellendam and Cape Town, including community leaders, partners, and residents. CCPB provided refreshments for the celebration, while Swellendam SuperSpar supported catering.

Guests were treated to performances by a local marimba band and the Twilight Children’s Dance Group before touring the classrooms, playground, and food garden.

The Rotary Club of Swellendam expressed deep gratitude

“Without our partners we could never have created this multi-functional facility for our community,” said a Rotary spokesperson.

“We are dedicated to creating hope for the future of the children within our community by helping them prepare for primary school so that they can thrive and achieve their dreams.”

John Winship from the Rotary Club of Newlands added: “These important and worthy projects bring real value to communities that desperately need the opportunity to educate and uplift children. Without collaboration, goodwill, and shared vision, this would not have been possible.”

The Swellendam Rotary School will not only offer early learning opportunities for preschoolers but will also provide aftercare for primary school learners and adult literacy classes in the evenings, making it a true community hub for lifelong learning.

The project forms part of CCPB’s broader community investment strategy, which focuses on education, youth development, and environmental sustainability.

Through initiatives like the Swellendam Rotary School, CCPB continues to invest in building stronger, more resilient communities across the Western and Northern Cape.
